What is CST?

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle and truely holistic treatment, that addresses mental, emotional, physical and spiritual levels of the body, recognising that all aspects help to make up an integrated whole person.

The science

Quantum science tells us that we are a coherent living matrix, guided by forces and rhythms which surround and permeate us in the natural world. These are referred to as electromagnetic or biodynamic forces (Oschman – Energy Medicine – The scientific explanation 2000), forming the basis of physics, chemistry and biology and which permeate our body’s and our natural environment. These forces generate life, growth, health and healing.  Our bodies express these forces as a subtle motion known as the Craniosacral rhythm. It is an indication of our aliveness and a reflection of our vitality.

During treatment

Craniosacral Therapy connects with this and practitioners use a very gentle and light touch to engage with and respond to the subtle Craniosacral rhythm of the clients body. The light touch “listens” to your body, and your body responds by beginning to listen to itself. This Craniosacral rhythm is referred to by the founder of CST William Garner Sutherland D.O. as primary respiration or the “Breath of Life” (subtle breathing movements of every cell in the body). This means that during a session a clients body has the innate capcity for self-healing. The practitioner facilitates this process, leading to restored balance of mind, body, emotion, energy and release of physical stress and restriction.

The movements of fascia, fluids and membranes are followed into periods of stillness and unwind, so that normal and efficient function can resume, restoring underlying health. This may be felt by the client as heat, tingling sensations or pulsation as changes occur.

Sessions are conducted fully dressed and best experienced as a regular therapy, working through deeply-held shock, trauma or compression patterns held deep within the tissues. Profound healing can take place at deep levels where tissue memory can evoke emotions or memory recall often linked to old physical injury patterns.
